Live Review: Deserted Village, Anseo, Dublin Martin A. Egan

“Next up are Boys Of Summer: Andrew Fogarty and Ivan Pawle Junior, augmented by The Jimmy Cake’s Paul Smyth and the winged fingerling talents of Cian Nugent, who sat in to play some beautiful arpeggio based acoustic guitar lines. The sub-tonal foundations of two Korg MS10 synthesizers, mixed with Smyth’s MS2000 keyboard, made for a sound that hovered somewhere between Henryk Gorecki, the bombing of Dresden and Keith Tippet in some of his darker moments, interspersed with some glacially clear yet beautiful keyboard melodies: a unique experience which would be much more powerful in a larger venue.”

The first in a series of three concerts presented by pianist Paul G. Smyth and composer Simon O’Connor. Smyth will perform a new work for solo piano by O’Connor as well as an improvised set at each event. A catalogue and CD recording will accompany the final concert. O’Connor’s three new pieces are composed with elements of Schubert’s Die Winterreise, but O’Connor says his works ‘unlike that particular journey, are odes to the joy of the coldest season’. Warm mulled drinks will be provided before each concert.

CD Review: For Christina Carter

“A 3″CD reissue of an 18 minute piece that originally appeared on a Foxglove label compilation, this showcases Irish pianist Smyth’s considerable gifts as an improvisor. Building from a few hesitant melodic daubings into a huge churning mass of tumbling arpeggios, it’s a genuinely cathartic listening experience. His approach is slightly reminiscent of a more crashing, energised version of The Necks’ mighty Chris Abrahams, in the way he causes his music to spiral outwards from a still point, covering a lot of ground with few abrupt dynamic or harmonic shifts. He just does it a lot more loudly. It would be interesting to see how he might be able to sustain such fuck-you intensity over a longer timeframe. I note with some amusement that he tags his MySpace site “the bad-tempered clavier”. Luckily for us, it sounds like he was particularly pissed off on the day he recorded this.”

Live Review: The Necks / Paul G. Smyth Benedict Schlepper-Connolly

“Paul G. Smyth – who I have come to regard as Ireland’s darkest jewel –
opened the concert with two solo piano improvisations. They formed perfect
preludes: unlike the silky calm of the Necks, Smyth’s style is more troubled at
the surface and is generally groove-less and a-rhythmic; but their
undercurrents are unisonly serene. (That said, Smyth did send out an
occasional beat and pseudo-melody, so uncharacteristic that each one was a
revelation.)
… both made refreshingly clear that non-directional music such as this
deserves our attention, especially in our modern, trajectorial culture. It goes
nowhere and has nowhere to go, and that’s alright.”

One For The Road: A Road Records Benefit & Celebration

Andrew’s Lane Theatre
Andrew's Lane, Dublin 2
€20 + booking fee | 8pm - 2.30am

On January 15th 2009, Road Records of Fade Street in Dublin City announced that it would soon be closing its doors for the final time. Over the last 11 years, Road Records has been a passionate torch-bearer for the spirit of independent music in Ireland. In Dave, Julie & Dylan, you had some of the friendliest, most knowledgeable and helpful folk you could ever hope to introduce you to new music, and the imminent loss of Road Records will be felt acutely by musicians and punters alike. To celebrate the legacy of Road Records, and to help towards the debts incurred by Dave & Julie in keeping the shop open during hard times, there will be in Andrew’s Lane on March 14th a wonderful array of live music from some the brightest lights in independent Irish music. This is a clarion call for supporters of independent music to show solidarity with one of its great Irish institutions, and to collectively ensure that those independent retailers that still remain get the support they badly need to survive, and to show that personality, variety & soul, so perfectly embodied by Road, are not outmoded retail concepts.

Spectre & Crown with obi-strip

“… unforgettable … an extraordinary blossoming … Clarinets, pianos and strings billow out over 54 sublime minutes of what is their best work yet.”
****
The Ticket / Irish Times

“It’d take at least 5 years to produce something as accomplished and inventive as this!”
****1/2
Hot Press

“An indelible chronicle of nine musicians contributing to a singular and necessary vision”
State Magazine

“… it has been worth the wait, as Spectre & Crown is easily their finest work to date. From the opening piano chord of Red Tony, to the final note of Last Breath, The Jimmy Cake hardly put a foot wrong.”
Totally Dublin

“Spectre & Crown is The Jimmy Cake’s most arresting album to date.”
Sunday Times

“This record is simply a work of extreme orchestral splendour.”
****
Sunday Tribune

“By turns minimalistic and multi-layered, Spectre & Crown has moments of astonishing beauty. There are plenty of captivating tracks too – soaring and emotive.”
****
Day & Night / Irish Independent

“… one of the most coherent, beautiful albums of the year so far.”
entertainment.ie

“The album is a moving, sweepingly beautiful, orchestral epic with nine life-enhancing tracks of such diversity and scope that it’s hard to fathom that just nine people made it.
… few records will reach the heights that this royally brilliant piece of work reaches. An instant and longterm classic.”

Westmeath Examiner
